What is a shadowban on X?

A shadowban is when X quietly limits who can see your account without telling you. Your posts still exist and your followers may still see them, but they stop showing up in search, your account disappears from search suggestions, or your replies get hidden under other people's posts. X calls this visibility filtering. Under its “freedom of speech, not freedom of reach” policy, X reduces the reach of some posts and accounts instead of removing them.

Because X never sends a notice, the usual sign is a sudden drop in views, likes and replies with no change in what you post. A shadowban is not a suspension: a suspended account is locked or gone, while a shadowbanned account works normally for you and is just harder for everyone else to find.

The 6 checks this tool runs

Most shadowban checkers only test whether your profile loads and whether a search finds you. This one runs every test that can be measured from outside the account:

checkthe questionhow it's tested
Account statusIs the account live, suspended, deactivated or private?Looks the profile up directly. A suspended or missing account ends the scan here.
Search banDo your posts show up in X search at all?Searches X for from:yourname in Latest. Zero results while you have posts = search ban.
Search suggestion banDoes your account appear when people search your name?Runs a people search for your handle and looks for your account in the results.
Ghost ban (reply deboosting)Do your replies show up under the posts you reply to?Opens the conversation of your latest reply and looks for your reply in it.
Sensitive media labelHas X marked your profile's media as sensitive?Reads the sensitive-media flag on your profile. Labeled posts are hidden from people with safe search on.
Country withholdingIs your account blocked in some countries?Reads the list of countries where X withholds your account.

Search ban: your posts don't appear in search

A search ban hides your posts from X search for everyone except you. Test it yourself: log out (or open a private window) and search from:yourname in the Latest tab. If you've posted recently and nothing comes up, your posts are excluded from search. The checker runs this exact search and links to it, so you can open the same results.

Search bans usually follow spam-like patterns: posting the same text or link again and again, stuffing posts with trending hashtags, or a burst of activity from a new account. They can also follow a wave of reports or a sensitive-media label on the account.

Search suggestion ban: people can't find your account

With a search suggestion ban, your account no longer comes up when someone types your name or handle into the search bar. Your profile still works if someone has the direct link, but new people can't discover you. This hurts growth more than anything else, because the main way people find a new account is by searching for it.

The checker runs a people search for your exact handle and looks for your account in the results. If accounts with similar names show up and yours doesn't, that's a search suggestion ban.

Ghost ban (reply deboosting): your replies are hidden

A ghost ban, also called reply deboosting, pushes your replies to the bottom of a conversation or behind “Show probably spam” and “Show more replies”. You can still see your own reply, so it feels like nobody is engaging, when in fact most readers never see it.

The checker finds your latest reply, opens the conversation it belongs to, and checks whether your reply is listed there for everyone. Busy threads with hundreds of replies can't be checked completely. In that case the result is marked inconclusive rather than guessed. Reply to a smaller post and scan again for a clear answer.

Sensitive media labels and country withholding

If X marks your profile's media as possibly sensitive, your posts can be hidden behind a warning and dropped from search for anyone using safe search, which is the default for many people. This often happens when you've ticked “Mark media you post as having material that may be sensitive” in your settings, or after reports.

Withholding is different: X blocks the whole account in specific countries, usually after a legal request. Nobody in those countries can see you at all. The checker lists any countries where your account is withheld.

How to get unshadowbanned on X

Most shadowbans are temporary and lift once the behavior that triggered them stops. Work through these steps:

  1. 01
    Stop the trigger

Pause whatever you changed before the drop: mass follows or unfollows, repeated hashtags, identical replies, link-only posts, or automation tools.

  2. 02
    Remove flagged posts

Delete posts that got reported or that X labeled, especially anything that might break the rules on sensitive media or spam.

  3. 03
    Check your settings

In Settings → Privacy and safety → Your posts, turn off "Mark media you post as having material that may be sensitive" if your content doesn't need it.

  4. 04
Post normally for a few days

Write original posts at a human pace. Reply to people who follow you. Avoid posting the same link many times.

  5. 05
    Verify your email and phone

Accounts without a confirmed email or phone look like bots to X's filters.

  6. 06
    Scan again

Run this checker again after 48–72 hours. Every check links to the exact search on X, so you can confirm the fix yourself.

X doesn't publish how long restrictions last. Most people report that temporary limits lift within 48 hours to two weeks. If a search ban sticks around after that, look for posts that keep getting reported and remove them.

Check accounts automatically

Managing many accounts, or building a bot or AI agent that posts on X? Run the same checks from code. The search-ban test is a single call to the twitr.sh X API. It's paid per call in USDC, with no API key and no signup:

curl -X POST https://twitr.sh/api/tools/x_search \
  -H 'content-type: application/json' \
  -d '{"q":"from:yourname","queryType":"Latest","resultsLimit":5}'
# → HTTP 402 with the exact price; pay with any x402 / MPP wallet and retry

Agents in Claude Code, Cursor or any MCP client can call it as the x_search tool. To be alerted when an account's visibility changes, set up a real-time monitor on it. See all X tools and pricing.

Questions

How do I know if I'm shadowbanned on X?
Enter your username above. The checker searches X for your posts, looks for your account in people search, and checks whether your latest reply appears in its conversation. If any of those comes back empty while your account is public and active, you are shadowbanned in that way. Each result links to the exact search on X so you can see it yourself.
Is shadowbanning on X real?
Yes. X calls it visibility filtering or reduced reach. Its own policy ("freedom of speech, not freedom of reach") says some posts and accounts are shown to fewer people instead of being removed. X doesn't notify you, which is why a checker is useful.
What is a search ban?
Your posts don't appear in X search results, even for a search like from:yourname. People who already follow you still see your posts, but anyone searching for a topic or for you won't find them.
What is a search suggestion ban?
Your account doesn't show up when people type your name or handle into the search bar. They can still reach your profile by its direct link, but they can't discover you through search.
What is a ghost ban or reply deboosting?
Your replies are hidden from the conversation, usually behind "Show probably spam" or "Show more replies". You see your reply, but other people reading the thread don't, so your replies get little or no engagement.
How long does a shadowban last on X?
X doesn't publish durations. Most people report that temporary restrictions lift within 48 hours to two weeks once the behavior that triggered them stops. Repeated violations can make restrictions last longer or lead to a suspension.
How do I get unshadowbanned on X?
Stop the behavior that triggered it (mass following, repeated hashtags, spammy links, automation), delete flagged posts, turn off the sensitive-media setting if you don't need it, confirm your email and phone, then post normally for a few days and scan again.
Does X Premium (blue check) protect against shadowbans?
No. Premium accounts get a ranking boost in replies, but X's spam and safety filters still apply to them. Verified accounts can be search banned or have replies deboosted like any other account.
Can automation or scheduling tools get me shadowbanned?
Posting through X's official API is allowed. What triggers filters is behavior: posting the same text over and over, aggressive following, or replying to many strangers at once. Tools that log into your account with your password, rather than through X's official sign-in, carry the most risk.
Is this shadowban checker free?
Yes. You get 3 free scans a day with no login. Results for each username are cached for 6 hours, so re-checking the same account is instant. Signed-in users can run extra scans for $0.02 each from their twitr.sh balance.
Can I check someone else's account?
Yes. The checker only reads public information: public posts, people search and public replies. It never logs into an account, and it can't test private (protected) accounts.
